Ministering at St. Luke's
Nothing brings that special joy like serving God through one of the ministries of your spiritual community. The Church is 99% an all-volunteer army and no local church can function without the generous donations of time and talent on behalf of its members. There are many ways to become involved in the life of the St. Luke's spiritual community. The following are a few ideas. You can volunteer to:
- Serve as a Greeter welcoming worshippers as they enter the church,
- Serve on the parish Altar Guild,
- Learn to operate the sound system during 10:00 worship,
- Sing in the choir,
- Play an instrument as a member of the Music Team,
- Provide hospitality during Coffee Hour,
- Serve at the altar as a Chalice Bearer,
- Be a Lay Eucharistic Minister,
- Read the scriptures during worship,
- Fix something that is broken in one of the buildings,
- Work with the parish Youth Group,
- Teach in the Church School,
- Help in the Church Office,
- Coordinate a ministry to the poor,
- Lead a small group Bible study in your home,
- Provide support and backup to our Nursery Worker,
- Sponsor of parish social activity,
- Become a member of the parish Prayer Team,
- Etc..
Studies indicate that the average new member of a congregation will usually drop out and stop attending if he or she has not connected with a small group of others in the parish within the first 6 months. Volunteering to serve in a ministry of your church is a very important way to build the relationships that will enable you to feel that St. Luke's has become your parish home and sustain you in the future.
Please volunteer. It's good for you spiritually and it is vital to your spiritual community. We need you!!!!!!

How is God calling you? by Mary McEntire
It is hard to accept that God calls each of us to ministry—we are often accus- tomed to thinking of ministry as the work of priests, deacons and bishops (and possibly the vestry or Sunday School teachers). In other words, “ministry” is something for others, especially those who have been ordained.
However, the Church teaches that every member of our spiritual community is called to ministry. Ministry comes from our baptism into the Body of Christ and takes many forms and works through many gifts (1 Corinthians: 12). The Church is “a Circle flowing from the ministry of Christ through lay persons, bish- ops, priests, and deacons”—not a hierarchy (Context for Ministry education by the Diocese of Utah). Each of us is part of that circle, and no one is more im- portant than another. Our challenge is to discover how God is calling each of us to ministry. This ministry may or may not involve a call to ordination.
The Discernment Committee is a new committee at St. Luke’s whose purpose is to help any parishioner hear God’s call to them. Discernment means to “distinguish between things.” Since we are all created in God’s image, we have an authentic inner voice of truth which gets covered over with fear and compet- ing voices from the material world as we “grow up.” The Discernment Commit- tee will work with anyone who wants to uncover their authentic call from the Holy Spirit. We cannot tell you what it is: we will accompany you on your jour- ney of discovery. This is a ministry of prayer, presence, listening, confidential- ity, love, truth-telling and support. We hope the members of St. Luke’s will allow us to help you discover how God is calling you at this time in your life.
