The guiding premises of our curriculum include:
.1.The study of Jesus of Nazareth as he lived and walked on this earth is an important component of a religious life today.
.2.The ideas of equality and radical love as taught in the Gospels are an ideal and worthy spiritual path.
.3.As basic familiarity with major people and events of the Bible is important part of a religious education, we wish to provide our young people with biblical literacy.
.
The 2009-2010 Sunday School year started Sunday August 30th, with classes beginning at 10:30 during the Worship Service. Ted Clayton is teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade,Bonnie Brown is teaching 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades, and Jane Sullivan is teaching grades 5, 6, 7 and 8.
The 2nd through 8th grade classes will continue using the Jesus and His Kingdom of Equals curriculum (with age appropriate modifications), and the K thru 1st grade class is using the wonderful curriculum we used last year. We recently completed a unit on prayer where we explored different ways to pray, including centering prayer and meditation, journaling and art.
After the unit on prayer and meditation we explored the theme “Who is My Neighbor—the Parable of the Good Samaritan”. Be sure to check out the murals the children made and are displaying in the hallways in the Sunday School area.
In January, we will start off the new year by exploring the themes of Epiphany, such as seeing God in those around us, and giving of our gifts and talents to make a difference in the world.
