TRAINING SESSION FOR ALL EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS (ALL WHO HELP WITH THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE BREAD AND WINE)

Sunday, March 7th at noon at the church.

PLEASE consider this something not to miss!!

The Christian Center is looking for a few friendly, outgoing, pleasant people who would like to volunteer at our lobby reception desk.  It would involve greeting and assisting visitors, answering and directing phone calls to appropriate employees or locations within the building, answering basic inquiries, keeping coffee area stocked and clean, and just being a general positive presence to those entering the building for whatever reason.

Ideally, we would like these volunteers to commit to a certain time frame each week, preferably at least a half day each week but volunteers can commit to more time if interested -- we do realize vacations and travel will take volunteers away periodically.

If you are interested in giving some of your time for a good cause, contact Pattie at the Christian Center either by email (pattie@ccofpc.org) or telephone (649-2260).

Thank you so much for considering this service opportunity!!

Memo: To all parish clergy

From:  Transition Committee

Re: Solicitation for donations and site selection for the consecration of the 11th Bishop of Utah

At recent meetings of the Transition Committee and Standing Committee we realized some clarification would be helpful to clergy in their presentation of material asking for parish support toward the election and bringing aboard of a new Bishop.  We present this Q & A:

Q: This solicitation appears to be quite elegant and deluxe. Shouldn’t the money that was spent on this be put to the fund to elect a Bishop?

A: This invitation was produced very quickly at no cost as a gift to the Diocese of Utah by O.C. Tanner Co.  It is the company’s gift and does not come personally from our Bishop.

Q. Is it true that the consecration of the new bishop will be held at Grand America?  Isn’t this a bit too “grand” given the financial constraints of the diocese and the fact we are asking for contributions from our already strapped congregations to pay for it?

A:  The Transition Committee members searched far and wide for a venue that would meet the needs of such an event.  Initially Kingsbury Hall was selected as a site. Other sites, such as South Towne Center or the E-Center were also on the list to consider. There were many drawbacks to each of them requiring a good bit of compromise and make-do.

Then, a wonderful thing happened: a major patron of this diocese contacted Grand America.  By the time that extended conversation ended, the Diocese was able to secure all that we needed for half the price usually charged by Grand America.  This is a great gift: instead of make-do places such as a university theatre, or sports arena, we have a beautiful, and as one of our members put it, “appropriately dignified” site for our day of celebration.

When compared with our costs and the limited availability of space at the other venues under consideration, the cost to take advantage of Grand America’s offer was only $2,000 more.  For this, we have all the parking we need and every event from gathering rooms, consecration, reception and excellent catering can be held in one place. Plus, the site is very easy to get to for persons staying at downtown hotels. It is also on the Trax line in the free fare zone.

Q. How come we have to collect money for the election and consecration? Wasn’t this part of anyone’s planned budget?

A. When Bishop Carolyn was elected, funding for her consecration and transition came from the Corporation of the Bishop which at the time was controlled solely by her predecessor.  In the interests of transparency and openness, the corporation was dissolved. There were no records kept of the costs to elect a Bishop.  Due to a downturn in portfolio earnings, we’ve come up short on what could be budgeted.  Every dollar you are able to give to the fund to elect and bring aboard the 11th Bishop will be tripled by a matching gift. Your $10 becomes $30.  Our Bishop has placed the remains of her special purposes fund into this effort, and all offerings made at the time of her visitation to parishes in 2010 will also be made part of this fund.  By participating as you can, you can take pride in welcoming our Bishop elect and continue the legacy of hospitality of our Bishop as she retires from office.

Please let us know if you receive any follow up questions that, if answered, would be helpful or better reception or understanding of this information. Thank you.
